Even when you’re bored – or just confused – by the mass of action cameras on the market, this new one, made by Olympus, is worth a second look. Because the TG-Tracker is, as the name implies, a baby from the Tough series.
Like any Olympus Tough camera, the TG-Tracker has the “you can drop me”-look owed to its rugged underwater housing. But while the regular TG digital cameras come across like the cooler versions of a point-and-click, the TG-Tracker is designed like all digital video cameras were – before action cameras took over. This means the TG-Tracker is great for those who prefer, or are used to shoot using a foldable screen. (Don’t worry, there’s a smartphone app, too.)
Technically, the TG-Tracker is an up-to-date outdoor (sports) camera, offering 204 degree angle view and a fixed focus of f2.0. The camera is able to shoot 4K (30p) and records audio in Stereo.
It comes with a built-in Wi-Fi, an accelerometer, GPS and compass, a temperature sensor, a water sensor and a barometer. Which of course makes sense since the TG-Tracker is 100ft (30m) waterproof.
A 60 lumen LED headlight, the ability to shoot 95min continuously (4GB file size) and a SD-slot for max. 128GB complete the positive picture.
Unsurprisingly, the TG-Tracker is bigger and heavier than a GoPro Hero (our reference model for action cameras) with 180g and 93.2mm on the largest size. But, as mentioned in the beginning, this shouldn’t be a problem for this Olympus outdoor video camera speaks to a different audience.
The price for the Olympus Stylus TG-Tracker starts at $349.99 and includes two lens protectors (standard & underwater) and a steady grip (!). The camera is scheduled for release in 2016.
