Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, explained the use of red, white, and blue on the American flag by saying: “White signifies purity and innocence. Red, hardiness & valour. And blue… signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.” These colors have for centuries stood as a symbol of patriotism and American national pride. With the celebration of Independence Day, Americans are sure to see them nearly everywhere this week.
As photographers, we have a number of tools to work with in order to create the perfect image. One of the most important is color. Whether you choose to oversaturate the colors in your images or convert them to black and white, these choices are often the first thing viewers will notice about your image. This week’s challenge is not only about celebrating America, but also using color in your images in a unique and creative way.
Independence Day celebrations are sure to be full of red, white, and blue. But for this week’s challenge, see if you can find the colors somewhere besides a flag or decorative bunting. Look around and see what kind of artistic vision you can capture using the colors of America. Hold a red flower against a blue, cloudy sky, or find some paint and get patriotic. If you’re not American, you can use these colors or the colors of your own country’s flag. Check out some of these photos for inspiration.
